Congratulations, Richard!

Here’s a note from Richard:

Many of you know that I have been working on my master’s degree in music composition at California State University, Northridge for the past two school years, and it is now time for my work to come to fruition. You are hereby invited to my master’s composition recital, titled “Between Worlds: Multi-Genreism in Music”!

Date: Wednesday, April 9, 2025 Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall at Cal State University Northridge CSUN

It will also be live streamed on YouTube, and the stream will be archived for anyone who cannot make it in person. The livestream link will be available on my website, richardbrunermusic.com.

The recital will feature 8 pieces that I have written over the past two years, for a medium-sized string chamber ensemble consisting of 2 violins, 3 violas, 1 cello and piano (and subsets thereof). I will be playing viola, and I will also play tin whistle and hammered dulcimer on a couple of the sets. I am joined by several of my friends who I have been playing with in Los Angeles over the past several years, several of whom play with me in the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles.

About half of the songs are based on combining classical art music elements with Scottish (or at least broadly Celtic) fiddle elements, and the other half combine art music with jazz, Caribbean, and Eastern European elements. A couple of the songs also feature cinematic textures from my roots as a Berklee-trained film composer. Solo and ensemble improvisation also play a role in several of the pieces.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it in person!

Logistics – Address: 18111 Nordhoff St, Northridge, CA, 91330 (Google Maps will give you a slightly different address if you search for the recital hall directly, but then if you enter that manually it’s across the street from the university. It does show it correctly if you search by name rather than address.)

Park in Lot B1 (corner of Nordhoff and Darby – access from Darby) for best access to the hall. The recital hall is in Cypress Hall on Nordhoff St. From B1, walk east past Nordhoff Hall and then it’s the next building. (It is a 5+ minute walk to the building from the lot – leave enough time to get there!) The recital hall is on the south side of the courtyard in Cypress Hall, room 158, accessed from the courtyard. Note that there is a parking fee to use any lot on campus (max. approx. $10), but the recital itself is free. The recital will last a little over an hour including a 20 minute intermission.
